Hospital and medical practices

Islay has one hospital and three medical practices. The practices are in Port Ellen, the Rinns and Bowmore (based in Islay Hospital). The three doctors’ practices on Islay are responsible for Islay Hospital’s A & E department and ward 24 hours, seven days a week as well as for patients, both locals and visitors to the island.

Islay Hospital

The Islay Hospital in Bowmore provides a Community Casualty Unit, GP acute ward, Maternity, Radiography, AHPs and Community Nursing.

Port Ellen Practice

Port Ellen is a dispensing practice with GPs. It provides general medical services to patients from all areas of Islay on behalf of Argyll & Bute CHP and NHS Highland. The GPs also provide the out-of-hours service for Islay and care for patients in Islay Hospital.

Bowmore Medical Practice

A rural Practice based in Islay Hospital. The practice has patients from all areas of Islay and Jura registered under the care of the practice team.
