Islay Sea Adventures, based in Port Ellen Marina, offer a wide range of fantastic boat trips, mainly from Port Ellen and some from Port Askaig. Witnessing the incredibly varied wildlife in Islay's waters and seeing the island from a boat is one of the best ways to discover Islay. You can see the three Kildalton distilleries (Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg) from up close which is a fantastic experience.
Islay Sea Adventures are currently operating four boats. The Wavedancer, for wild life and fishing, survey and workboat. The Ileach Catamaran for wild life and fishing, survey and workboat. Boomerang for smaller parties, wildlife and excursions and the Sea Explorer, a fast RIB for speed thrills, wildlife and excursions
We run trips 2 times a day at 10 am and 2 pm (weather and numbers permitting). The trips cover the history of key points off Islay and the journey includes laphroaig, lagavulin and Ardbeg distillery. We also visit Dunyvaig and Kildalton castle, then further up the coast we enter into The SE skerries which is a very important European Special area of conservation. This area hosts a large army of wildlife including deer on the islands, and up to 1000 seals at the height of the season in june, when the colony of Common seals start to have baby seal pups, it has many birds of prey including sea eagles, buzzards, peregrine falcons, just to name a few of its inhabitants. The Mull of Oa is headland to the SE of Port Ellen it has a very varied rocky coastline and is steeped in history and a graveyard of shipwrecks each with a story. The most famous being the Tuscania and Otranto in which a monument was built for the loss of life on both boats. In 1918 the monument was built by the American Red Cross as a memorial to all who were lost. The OA is also home to colonies of guilimots, kitty wakes, the very rare chuffs and also 2 pair of Golden eagles. If the weather is permitable Soldiers Rock on the west side is an old man of hoy type rock pinnacle which has a seam of quartz running through it and behind the soldiers rock is a cave which we can enter with the boat to reveal a waterfall and water level archways. Another special place on Islay.
This is a longer trip, leaving from Port Askaig, sailing along the west coast of Jura. This is your chance to see the third largest whirlpool in the world which is a real spectacle of nature. At its best with tidal currents as fast as 10 knots flowing over a very rough seabed going from 70 mtrs straight up to 29 mtrs in a short space of time. It is one of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the British Isles. It is said that at certain times the roar is so loud that it can be heard ten miles away. At full strength the currents can reach over 10 knots and produce waves over 9 m high. The result is a very confused sea state which can help forming a whirlpool. This truly is a unique trip and not for the faint hearted. All sea adventures boats are twin engined to cope with this area which helps make our boats some of the safest boats to do these trips. Book the Corryvreckan Trip here
